What is an instant decision credit card?
An instant decision credit card lets you know quickly if you’re likely to be approved. Lenders typically use a soft credit check, which won’t affect your credit score.
But approval isn’t guaranteed. You’ll still need to meet the lender’s eligibility criteria, so the decision should be viewed as a guide rather than a guarantee. If you choose to apply, the lender may carry out extra checks, including a hard credit check.
Increasing your chances of being approved for an instant decision credit card
A good credit score can improve your chances of being approved for a credit card. However, if your credit history isn’t perfect, you may still be eligible, and there are steps you can take to improve your credit score over time.
Consider getting a credit builder credit card
Credit builder credit cards are designed for people who have a poor credit score or those with little or no credit history. With good money management, like meeting your minimum payments and keeping on top of your spending, your credit score can improve over time. This comes as you gradually demonstrate to creditors that you’re financially responsible.
Register on the electoral roll
Credit checks help lenders verify your identity and reduce fraud. Making sure you’re registered on the electoral roll can help prove that you are who you say you are. Find out more at the UK government website.
Check for mistakes on your file
Mistakes on your credit file can damage your credit score. This includes things like a wrong missed payment or an incorrect address. Make sure your info is accurate and up to date and correct any mistakes you find.
Keep your borrowing under control
Lenders may look at how much credit you’re currently using when assessing an application. Keeping balances low and paying on time shows that you manage credit responsibly.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get instant approval on a credit card with bad credit?
Yes, it’s possible to get instant approval on a credit card even if you have a poor credit history, although approval isn’t guaranteed. Lenders will still assess your application and eligibility before making a decision.
Your credit score may be lower for many reasons, such as missed payments, a limited credit history, or recently moving to the UK. If you’re approved, using your credit card responsibly by making payments on time and staying within your credit limit could help you build or rebuild your credit profile over time.
Does my credit history matter?
Your credit score often plays a major role in whether you’ll be accepted for a credit card. You’re likely to need a good credit score to be accepted. If you have average or poor credit, a lender may insist you undergo further checks to verify if you’re eligible for a credit card and can handle the repayments.
Can I get a credit card the same day?
You can find out if you’re likely to be approved for a credit card the same day. When you use our eligibility checker, we’ll let you know within minutes whether your full application is likely to be accepted.
If you decide to then apply for a Vanquis Credit Card, we’ll let you know our decision within 28 days of receiving your application.
If you’re approved, your card will be sent to you by post and should arrive within 7 to 10 working days. For added security, we’ll send your PIN separately. Once you’ve received your card, you can also view your PIN in the Vanquis app.
What do I do if my instant decision credit card application has been rejected?
There are many reasons why you can be rejected for a credit card application. The most common reasons are:
Mistakes on the application form
Errors, like putting the wrong name, address or financial details, can make it difficult or impossible to perform a credit check. Double-check your info before you submit your application, as mistakes could affect the outcome.
Your credit score is too low
Lenders may have reviewed your application and deemed you too high risk or unable to make the repayments based on your credit score. In some cases, creditors may refer you to a more suitable card that gives you a higher chance of being accepted.
You have a poor payment history
If you have a history of missed payments, defaulting on credit accounts and bankruptcy, lenders may reject your application. They may also refer you to a more suitable card with higher interest rates to see if you’re eligible for that. It’s possible they would reject these applications because they’re seen as high risk and think the potential customer may be unable to meet the repayments based on the evidence provided.
You’re currently using too much credit
If you’re currently accessing too much of your available credit, or already have multiple credit cards with outstanding payments, lenders may reject your application.
Legal issues
If a lender checks your credit and thinks there’s illegal activity, like identity theft or fraud, they might reject your application. They could also ask for more proof of your identity and finances.

What is a guaranteed approval credit card?
A ‘guaranteed approval credit card’ is a term used to describe a card that claims to offer acceptance whatever your circumstances. This means a lender approves each application without checking the customer’s finances.
Guaranteed approval credit cards don’t exist in the UK. Lenders are required to carry out checks before offering credit. This includes checks on your identity, eligibility, and ability to repay what you borrow. This is part of responsible lending requirements set by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
Some lenders may provide pre-approval or eligibility checks. These can show you how likely you’re to be accepted. However, this is not a guarantee. Even if a card claims ‘instant’ or ‘guaranteed’ approval, checks may still be required before a final decision is made.
Is there anything I can do to speed up the credit card application process?
Our application process is designed to protect your security and help us make responsible lending decisions. To help avoid delays, make sure you provide accurate info when you apply. If we need more info from you, responding quickly can also help us process your application faster.
When will I know my credit limit?
If your application is approved, you’ll be told your credit limit as part of the application process. The amount you’re offered will depend on your individual circumstances and the lender’s assessment.
When can I choose my card colour?
You’ll be able to choose your card colour once your application has been accepted.
